Died September 14, 2007 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom

When Barry Wagoner suffered injuries while serving in Iraq, Terry D. Wagoner called his cousin. “He said he gave Barry a pep talk,” said Scott Wagoner, Terry’s father. Terry Wagoner, 28, of Piedmont, S.C., was killed Sept. 14 in Baghdad when an explosive detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to Fort Hood and was on his second tour. The younger Wagoner had become a leader in the Army, his dad said. “The main thing about Daniel is that he needed a bit of discipline in his teens,” Wagoner said. “He was a follower, and he needed to be a leader.” In high school, he was a track star. He ran the 440 and 880 and was ranked statewide. His father said he continued to enjoy running during his two deployments in Iraq. He follows a tradition of five uncles who also served in the military. “Daniel knew what he was doing,” the elder Wagoner said. “He was doing the right thing.” He also is survived by his wife, Kate, and his daughter, Dianna Louise, 3. “All my hopes and dreams I had were in my son,” said the elder Wagoner, a minister. “I was looking forward to that.”
